The village of Ulten (since 1960) encompasses most of the Ultental, which starts near Lana in the Etschtal. In contrast to its lower part, the upper part of the valley is wider. The village is subdivided into three settlements named after the church patron saints: St. Walburg (administrative centre), St. Nikolaus and St. Gertraud (at the end of the valley). Their centres are located in the valley, whereas scattered farms and clustered farmhouses are situated on the sunny slopes. Above those settlements large pasture lands and forests are to be found. Because of the water available, four reservoirs were built between 1949 and 1969. Even though tourism has led to a small boost in the economy, many people still have to commute outside the village. |
