Laurein is one of the three villages, which are situated in the Italian -speaking Nonsberg region. The Noce River, which confluences with the Etsch River near Mezzolombardo (Trentino), runs on the terraced plateau. Laurein belongs to the district of Burggrafenamt and is situated in a depression 1000 m above sea level at the southern foot of the Ultner Mountains. For a long time the only way to reach the village from South Tyrol was over the Mendel- and Gampen Pass. Since 1998 Laurein can be reached directly on a road from St. Pankraz im Ultental over Proveis and the Hofmahd Saddle. The village is still characterized by scattered farmhouses and agriculture.
