Stumm, the second smallest village in the Zillertal, is situated in the central part of the valley. North of the scattered village of Stumm, with its beautiful market square, the hamlets of Großmärz and Untermärz are to be found. Long stretched Ahrnbach, with its numerous new houses, is located south of the centre. Stumm's political development is unique among its neighbouring villages: Stumm and Stummerberg have never been part of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, but formed an independent march, which was subject to the court, till the beginning of the 19th century. Castle Stumm in the village dates back to these times. Whereas the hamlets are characterized by the farming sector, Stumm offers a great spectrum of small industrial-, commercial- and service businesses.
