Lermoos in the western part of the Lermooser Basin is one of the oldest settlements in the Außerfern region. Following the road to Zwischentoren Lermoos and the former hamlet of Gries have formed a settlement unit. North of Gries the two hamlets of Ober- and Untergarten are situated. Due to its geographical position along the road to the Fern Pass, Lermoos has experienced an economic development: in 1318 a store house for salt was built, in 1500 Lermoos became a trading centre. After World War II, Lermoos turned into the most important village for winter tourism in the entire Außerfern region. The impact of tourism has changed the village, which is still dominated by its impressive baroque parish church. |
