Heiterwang, situated south of Reutte, lies in a widening gap of the valley with a connection to Lake Heiterwang. The village is situated in Zwischentoren, the area between the Ehrenberger Klause Gorge and Castle Fernstein. Heiterwang is partly characterized by new developments. The village, situated along a short, steep road to Reutte, was very important in the times when goods were transported by horses and carts, as a place where goods were exchanged, horses changed and Heiterwang was a post station. Salt was transported on the Obere Straße Road over the Fern- and Reschen Pass. Archduke Siegmund and Emperor Maximilian frequently visited Heiterwang to fish in Lake Heiterwang. Due to its lake, Heiterwang has some tourism. Many people commute to Reutte for work.
