After Reutte, Ehrwald, also called the "Zugspitzdorf" Village, has the highest population in the district of Reutte. It is situated on the slopes of the Wetterstein Mountain Range. The historic centre has been extended through new developments in the north and south along the road. Situated away from the main road over the Fern Pass, Ehrwald used to have an indirect share on the haulage business over the pass. This was due to the production of staves for the salt barrels for the salt mine in Hall. Because of the landscape of the Wetterstein Mountain Range, which surrounds Ehrwald, tourism has already been established around the 19th century. Today Ehrwald is an important place for summer- and winter tourism. 1926 the Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn Funicular was built as one of the first funiculars in Austria.
