The village of Alpbach lies in the centre of the Alpbach Valley south of the Inn Valley. The scattered village of Alpbach with its wooden houses and the balconies with their beautiful floral decorations has already won several prizes ("Austria's most beautiful village" in 1983, "Europe's most beautiful florally decorated village" in 1993). Alpbach has gained international fame by hosting the "European Forum Alpbach", which has taken place every August since 1945 where leading personalities from the fields of science, economics, culture and politics come together. In 1999 the modern "Congress Centre" was built for this annual event. Besides the small settlement of Inneralpbach at the end of the valley, the landscape is characterized by impressive farmhouses on the slopes. Alpbach's main sources of income are tourism and agriculture.
