Brixlegg, one of the oldest settlements in the Unterinntal region, is situated at the entrance of the Alpbachtal. In 1927 Brixlegg became a market town. Today Brixlegg is an industrial town, which has its origins in the former smelting works of the Counts of Tyrol. Presently the Montanwerk is Austria's only copper mine and one of the most important employers of the region. Besides the Montanwerk there are textile industries, and the therapy and spa centre of Bad Mehrn to be found in Brixlegg. Even though Brixlegg was nearly destroyed completely during air raids in World War II, there are still some historic sites left - the Kupferschmiedehaus (copper black smith) in the centre, the Getreidekasten (granary) and the Residence of Grasegg.
