Welschnofen is situated on the northern slopes in the central part of the Eggental, which runs eastwards from Kardaun in the lower Eisacktal. The 3 km long settlement stretches along gentle hilly pasture lands at the foot of the Rosengarten Mountain Range and the Latemar Mountains, which surround the valley. Due to the Dolomiten Road, which links the valley over the Karer Pass with the neighbouring Fassa Valley, tourism has started early. The beginning of tourism was focused around the Karersee, were a grand hotel and a holiday home village was built in 1896. Famous people, among Empress Elisabeth (Sissi), Winston Churchill and Karl May, have found recreation here. |
