Schwendau is situated west of the Ziller River in the upper Zillertal. It encompasses several settlements (former hamlets) at the bottom of the valley, which stretch along the fans of several rivers, as well as Klein - Schwendberg and Asteggberg. A beautiful sight of Schwendau is the Burgstallschrofen Hill, on which a castle was situated till the 14th century. In the north, Schwendau and Hippach form an agglomeration. The two villages share administrative buildings, schools and societies. In the south, Schwendau is connected with Mayrhofen. The Hochbergbahn lift in Schwendau connects the village with the "Ski - Zillertal 3000" skiing area.
