Gramais is situated in a valley near the Lechtal and it is Austria's smallest politically independent village with its own parish. It was settled from Imst in the 13th century. Since the construction of the well developed safe 8,5 km long road from Häselgehr, Gramais has been accessible even in winter when the hazard of avalanches used to lead to a frequent closure of the road in the past. Because of being cut off from the outside during the winter months, many people have left Gramais. Situated at an altitude of 1300 m, the cultivation of the farm land has always been extremely difficult. Today Gramais is a popular starting point for mountain tours in the Lechtaler Alps.
