Mariastein is the smallest village in the political district of Kufstein. Mariastein is situated on a terrace of the Angerberg Mountain in the Unterinntal region. Its famous pilgrimage church attracts many pilgrims every year. The castle with its 42 m tall keep was once built to protect the old Roman road on the left side of the Inn River. There are 150 steps leading up the tower. Today Mariastein is away from important roads. Even though there are hardly any local businesses, Mariastein has become a popular residential area, which caused an increase in population figures.
