The comprensorio Valle di Fiemme with its settlement of Cavalese stretches in a west-easterly direction from Valfloriana to Predazzo with the mighty Catena dei Lagorai massif. Worth mentioning historically is that in the Middle Ages a citizens' administrative and judicial structure developed that existed almost independently and self-reliantly for many centuries. In this way the valley remained unaffected by medieval feudalism which is why there are no castles or fortifications here that are otherwise so widespread in South Tyrol and Trentino. Nowadays the major sources of income are tourism and wood processing. Cavalese is one of the most important tourist areas in the Province of Trient.
