In the comprensorio Ladina di Fassa - which borders onto the Rosengarten in the west and onto the Marmolada in the east - the majority of the population belongs to the Ladin language group. Isolated for a long time tourism, with the opening of the Dolomiten Straße road from Bozen to Vigo di Fassa shortly after the turn of the last century, brought an alternative source of income to farming. A few years later the road up to the Passo Pordoi was opened and finally in 1909 went as far as Cortina d'Ampezzo. Nowadays tourism is the main source of income for the majority of the local people. The most important holiday resort is Canazei with its lift connection to the Sella Ronda. Particularly worth mentioning are the arts and crafts, the wood-carving and the cabinet work. |
