The scattered village of Holzgau is situated on the fan of the Höhen Torrent in the upper Lechtal. After Elbigenalp, Holzgau with its central market place is the second-oldest settlement in the valley. Holzgau became an independent parish in 1401. Holzgau's houses are decorated with outstanding frescos. Many people from Holzgau gained fame and a fortune as travelling salesmen, owners of shipping companies and with their businesses in Europe and America. When they returned back home, they decorated their homes lavishly. Some are built in a French style with attic roofs. Holzgau is a starting point for tours in the Lechtaler and Allgäuer Alps.
