Fendels is situated 500 m above the valley bottom in the Oberes Gericht region. It was first mentioned in a document in 1297. The once densely constructed nucleated village has lost most of its original character due to two big fires in 1939 and 1972. Before the road was built in 1959, the remote village was only connected with the valley by a cable railway. The building of the skiing area of Fendels has been the driving force for the development of the village. Today a modern cable railway takes people up to the skiing area. Documents proof that there was a small pilgrimage chapel near the renovated ruins of the hermitage 'Wiesele'. |
