Rettenschöss is the smallest village in the Untere Schranne region, which is situated east of the Inn River and represents the most western border between the Tyrol and Bavaria. The centre of the scattered village is the hamlet of Harland, which only consists of the parish hall, the primary school and a chapel. Rettenschöss forms a parish together with Niederndorf and therefore has no own parish church. Soft tourism has not done any harm to the rural character of the village.
