Aurach bei Kitzbühel is situated in the centre of the Kitzbüheler Alps (locally referred to as "Grass-Mountains"), approximately 4 km south of the district capital Kitzbühel, on the road to Pass Thurn. Excavations prove that this area was already inhabited 2000 years ago. The village is subdivided into the two villages of Unter- and, further away from the main road, Oberaurach with its onion-domed parish church. Due to the proximity of the tourist centres around Kitzbühel, the former scattered villages of Haberberg on the western and Kochau on the eastern slope of the valley have experienced a significant number of new developments within the last decades.
