Polling is situated on the southern side of the Oberinntal, between the villages of Zirl and Telfs. Before the construction of a dam the pastures near the Inn River had been flooded frequently. Today this part of Polling is still not very much developed. Because of the floods the old scattered village of Polling (which was first mentioned as "Pollinga" in a document in 763) was built on fans. In the Middle Ages isolated farmhouses in Pollingerberg were built 200 m above the bottom of the valley. Only within the last years Polling has become a dormitory town for nearby Innsbruck, which led to new developments and an expansion of the settlement.
