Axams, with its infrastructure of regional significance, has the highest population of all villages on the terrace, west of Innsbruck. Some scattered hamlets and settlements also belong to the scattered village of Axams. The latest phase of development can best be seen in Kristen and Wollbell, where on a slope facing the south, recent developments have led to a continuous band of settlements, extending for more than 2 km. The significant increase in population figures within the last decades has turned Axams into a suburb of nearby Innsbruck. Axamer Lizum (1564 m) has become famous internationally since it hosted several competitions during the Winter Olympics (Innsbruck 1964 and 1976). Today it is a popular skiing and hiking area with a great number of lifts.
