The Sarca-Schlucht gorge near Stenico has always divided the district into the western Inner- (Tione) and eastern Außerjudikarien (Stenico). Because of its different economic structure the district can be divided into three regions. While industry is most important in the Val del Chiese, tourism is the most important source of income in the Val Rendena. Traditional agriculture generally plays the most important role in the Außerjudikarien. Due to its peripheral location, modern advances are not taken up quickly here. One can still find the traditional "coltura mista" (mixed cultivation) here where crops, vines and trees are planted on the same plot. Agricultural modernisation has only set in over the last few years and is still an on-going process because for some time potential markets were lacking. The coltura mista and special crops (walnuts, blackcurrants) are all part of a diversified cultural scene. Gentle tourism can be found here so that it has not changed much since the beginnings of alpinism.
