Gsies is situated in the Gsiestal, east of the Pustertal. The landscape is characterized by numerous hamlets and isolated farmhouses on either side of the Pidig Torrent. The only two larger settlements are St. Martin-Niederdorf in the centre of the valley, which has been the centre of Gsies since a public opinion poll in 1995, and St. Magdalena at the end of the valley. Even though Gsies has a birth rate above the provincial average, population figures increase only slowly. More than half of the working people have to commute due to a lack of employment outside the farming sector.
