Musau is situated west of the Lech River, north of Reutte. Musau has no real centre but consists of several scattered hamlets. The hamlets of Brandstatt, Roßschläg and Saba stretch over a length of 4 km. Musau and Pinswang form one parish. In former times it belonged to the court of Vils, which was part of the Habsburg Empire, but only became part of the Tyrol in 1816.
