Umhausen is embedded in a wide gap between two narrow parts in the Ötztal. It is subdivided into several hamlets and villages. Umhausen's picturesque centre with the baroque parish church, well preserved houses and historical guesthouses ist situated on the fan of the Horlach Torrent, which has frequently devastated the village. Some commercial enterprises have been established within the last years. Umhausen's main source of income however, is tourism. The "Ötzi-Village", which was opened in 2001, the Stuiben Waterfalls and the beautiful hamlet of Niederthai are popular destinations for excursions in summer. The hamlet of Farst, on extremely steep slopes, gives a good example of the difficulties of farming in the high mountains. |
