Image collection »Valle di Non«

The Valle di Non runs in a north-south direction and includes the communities from Fondo to Spormione. In the past the economy was based on the breeding of silkworms and spinning. From 1855 this industry fell into a long-term crisis due to the silkworm illness. The building of the railway created new markets whereby fruit and wine-growing were greatly stimulated. In the meantime the Valle di Non has, with a total share of 60% of the entire Trentino fruit production, become the most important fruit-growing area in the Trentino. While approximately as many apples as pears were grown in the 1950s, nowadays more than 20 times more apples than pears are grown because these find markets more readily especially in Germany. Tourism is only important on the Mendelpass and its surroundings and decreases rapidly the further away one gets from the pass. While tourism has had relatively little effect on the structure of the rural settlements, numerous holiday homes on the edges of the villages are changing the appearance of the villages.
