Image collection »Prags«

The valley of Prags has its entrance between Welsberg and Niederdorf in the Pustertal and runs from here due south. The valley later divides into two separate valleys - Inner- and Außerprags. Before this furcation the valley is characterized by the gentle slopes formed by the Brixner quartz phyllite. The two tributary valleys on the other hand are part of the South Tyrolean Dolomites. The 37 hectares large and up to 36 m deep Pragser Wildsee in Innerprags is unique. The lake lies on an altitude of around 1500 m. The lake was formed by a rock slide from the Herrenstein. The Plätzwiese and the Pragser Wildsee are part of the Fanes-Sennes-Prags nature reserve. The name of the valley was first mentioned in a document in 965, when the name "Pragas" was given to a piece of pasture land in this area. In the 19th century the village of Altprags was a famous spa.
