Image collection »Lüsental«
The Lüsental stretches from the confluence of the Lasanka (Lüsener Bach) and the Rienz till the Peitlerkofel. Geologically the valley is dominated by the Brixner Quartz Phyllit. The area of the Pleiterkofel at the end of the valley is covered with a 600m thick layer of Schlern Dolomite. In contrast to many parts of South Tyrol Rhaeto-Romanic in Lüsen was only displaced by German in the course of the Bavarian plantation in the 14th century. Like in many parts of South Tyrol the cultivation of grain for self-supply played an important role in the rural communities till the 20th century. The former grain fields, on which rye, wheat, oat and barley were once planted, are now used as pasture land.
