The ruin of Schrofenstein is not easily accessible on its high rocky outcrop north-east of the village of Stanz. The von Schrofenstein dynasty is first mentioned in chronicles in 1228 and the castle probably already existed at that time. From 1380 to 1808 Schrofenstein's liegelord was probably the bishopric of Chur. After this time the castle was left to its own fate. An art historian and head of the planning department was the only one who showed interest in the castle again in the middle of the 20th century. Nowadays one is only able to still see the slim 6 storey 12m high keep that originally served as a residential tower.
