Virgen is situated in the lower part of the Virgental within the Hohe Tauern National Park and reaches the mountain crests on either side of the valley. The settlement stretches along the relatively flat slopes on the sunny side. The scattered village of Virgen forms the largest settlement and centre of the village. East and west of Virgen some hamlets are situated. The most famous one is Obermauern, a well-known pilgrimage site. Some isolated farmhouses above it add to the amiable pattern of the village. Even though Virgen is located at an altitude of 1200 m it is known for its mild climate caused by the high mountains (mor than 3000 m) in the north, which shelter the valley from bad weather. Agriculture and tourism are very important for the village.
