St. Johann im Walde is one of the smallest villages in the district of the East Tyrol in terms of population. The village is situated in the Iseltal between Lienz and Matrei. It encompasses several hamlets, such as St. Johann on the shadowy side with its church, south of the Drau River, which was nearly completely destroyed in a flood in 1966, Unterleibnig along the Felbertauern Road, and the hamlets and isolated farmhouses of Oberleibnig, Oblass, Öberst (on the northern slope) and Michlbach (on the southern slope). These hamlets are located on small terraces and can be reached on a cable pulley and on a road.
