The ribbon development of Scharnitz, northeast of Seefeld, is situated at the Bavarian-Tyrolean boarder. The formerly important border village lies within a wide part at the end of a valley, where the Karwendel-, Hinterau-, and Gleirschtal meet the Isartal. Scharnitz's landmark, the Porta Claudia, adorns the village emblem. Named after the former Tyrolean Princess Claudia of Medici, the bulwark was built during the Thirty Year's War as a stronghold between Bavaria and the Tyrol. Today its ruins can be visited. Scharnitz location at the entrance to the Karwendel Mountains makes it the ideal starting point for climbers and hikers.
