The Kalterer See is situated on a terrace above the Etsch Valley - the so called Überetsch. The Kalterer See is the warmest lake within the Alps and South Tyrol's largest lake for bathing. The lake is nowhere deeper than 5,6 metres. Reed is growing along its southern shore. Large vineyards lie around the lake and the wine from this region bears the lake's name.
