The Vils runs out of the Vilsalpsee in the Allgäuer Alps. First the river runs through the Tannheimer Valley before it crosses the border to Bavaria. After a big loop the river returns to the Tyrol where it soon later meets the Lech. The biggest settlements along the Vils in the Tyrol are Tannheim, Schattwald and the small town of Vils.
