The Hohe Peißenberg (998m) forms the boundary between the two parts of the district Welheim and Schongau. Germany's first weather station is located here and provides the longest consistent series of readings (since 1781) in the world. The term "Pfaffenwinkel" ("clerical corner"), often used to describe the district, is a reflection of the large number of monasteries and baroque churches. Because of the numerous religious buildings tourism developed here at a very early stage. The district has a well-balanced economic structure of industry, crafts, farming, trade and service industries. Crafts and medium-sized companies make up the economic framework.
