Area-wise Traunstein is the largest district (Landkreis) in Oberbayern (Upper Bavaria) and the second largest in Bavaria. It more or less covers the area known as the "Chiemgau". The Chiemsee also known as the "Bavarian Sea", with the exception of the islands of Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee, belongs entirely to the district and together with its shoreline is a protected area. 20% of the district is made up either of conservation areas or areas of rural preservation.
