Wengen, which has become an administratively independent village again in 1964, is situated in the Wengental, which runs eastwards near Pederoa in the central Gadertal. The sunny slope of the valley is covered with sparsely scattered isolated farms and hamlets, among the small village centre of Wengen at the entrance of the valley. Wengen has the highest proportion of Ladinic speakers in South Tyrol. Away from the hectic of the fancy tourist centres in the Hochabtei Valley, Wengen is still deeply rooted in its old traditions. The economy is based on local craftsmanship. Some companies, such as joineries and weaving mills, have been established in Pederoa.
