Wolkenstein, at the end of the Grödnertal, has experienced the biggest economic boost among all villages in the valley. The former idyllic village at the starting point to the Grödner Joch Pass (Gadertal) and Sella Joch Pass (Fleimstal) has transformed into a cluster of hotels and other tourist-related infrastructure. The Alpine Skiing World Championship in 1970 has even led to a faster economic growth and to an increase in traffic. All this has happened without considering ecological aspects. Developments like the ones in Wolkenstein have not taken place in the Langental in the north, which was saved from developers by making it a part of the Puez-Geisler Nature Reserve.
