Tannheim is the central and most important village in the Tannheimer high valley. A number of hamlets are situated around the scattered centre. Due to recent developments many of these have become larger settlements (Berg, Bogen, Geist and Kienzen). The baroque parish church is the largest one in the entire Außerfern region. Its ground plan is based on the one of the cathedral in Innsbruck. The bells were made in the famous workshop of Gregor Löffler in Innsbruck in 1561. Tannheim's surrounding with its gentle slopes, bizarre light limestone mountains in the west and the Vilsalpsee Nature Reserve of 4 km south of the village, have made it an important tourist centre.
