Image collection »Trafoital«

The Trafoital branches off from the Suldental in a south-westerly direction at Gomagoi. The road with its more than 48 sharp hairpin bends up to the Stilfser Joch ( 2757 m), one of the highest alpine passes, begins behind the settlement of Trafoi. The road was completed in 1824 and at that time served to secure inner-Austrian communications. When the region fell to Lombardy it lost its importance. Nowadays tourism is the most important source of income. Due to its high altitude, the road is only open in summer. The summer ski area that begins at the top of the pass is the only skiing area in the Alps that is open exclusively in the summer months.
