The Valser Tal has its entrance near the market town of Mühlbachl in the Pustertal to which it also belongs. The valley stretches from there due north. In the upper part the geology of the valley belongs to the outer schist layer of the Tauern crystalline. In addition to that the valley also consists of Brixner quartz phyllite and Brixner granite. The zone of old gneiss, runs through the valley. Like in many other valleys in South Tyrol the first settlements date back to the Schwaighof settlements. Beside the church one of the first landowners was the House of Wolkenstein - Rodenegg. From 1864 till 1929 the valley, which gained its living over centuries from dairy farming and cattle breeding, was an administratively independent community.
