At the entrance Vinschgauer schistous rocks dominate the Suldental. These rocks are covered by a layer of Ortler Triassic rocks along the line Stilfser Joch - Gomagoi - Königsjoch. Mining led to the development of the valley. Near Stilfser Alm, where Werfener layers meet layers of new red sandstone, argentiferous galena, barite and feldspar were mined. Despite the mining life in the valley was characterized by poverty. Over centuries smuggling goods over the Swiss border was an important source of income. Life in the valley only started to improve when tourism reached the valley. Trafoi was originally a summer resort. At the beginning of alpinism the Trafoier Eiswand attracted many alpinists. Today tourism in winter plays a more important part than in summer. At Trafoi the famous mountain pass over the Stilfser Joch, which links Vinschgau with the Italian Veltin, starts.
