The geology of the Sarntal is diverse. Except of dolomites all important kinds of rocks, which can be found in South Tyrol, can be found in the Sarntal. The entrance of the valley the Talfer cuts the steep Sarntaler Schlucht into the Bozner quartz porphyry. The central Sarnatl and the Durnholzer Tal consist of schiests of the quartz phyllite group. Within the Penser Tal a narrow layer of tonalite - granites reach the surface. Climate is also very diverse in the valley. It includes mild, sub-mediterran climate at the entrance of the valley, but also high-alpine climate at the upper part in the tributary valleys of Pens and Durnholz. Besides agriculture forestry has formed the main source of income for the people of the valley for a long time. Today several hydropower stations form the basis of the energy industry, which plays an important role in the valley.
