The Pfunderer Tal is a tributary valley of the Pustertal, which runs from Niedervintl northwards to the Zillertaler Alps. The first settlements were built in the course of the Schwaighof settlement. From 1811 to 1929 Pfunds was an administratively independent village. Since 1929 the valley, which is also called Weitental in the lower part, has been part of Vintl. The entrance of the valley is formed by Brixner granite; further upstream the geology changes from the gneiss zone into the outer schist layer, which consists of lime mica slate and lime phyllite. Mining played an important role in the valley. Beside white marble slate was quarried for roofing. Because of the good soil the upper part of the valley is used for pastures - even on the steep slopes. A road links Weidental over the Scharte with the plateau of Mersansen.
