Image collection »Martelltal«

Geologically the valley consists of Marteller quartz phyllite. Due to the geology mining was possible in past centuries. Till the 19th century the river Plima frequently turned into a rapid torrent, which caused heavy destructions in the valley. This was caused whenever a natural glacier - dammed lake burst. Till the 1980s the Plima, which was used for rafting logs downstream, frequently destroyed parts of the valley. In 1987 a devastating flood catastrophe took place. After that river engineers built nature-orientated preventive measures to make sure such a catastrophe won't happen again. In the 13th century the castles of Montani were important fortresses in the central Vinschgau. Today the people of Martell earn their living in agriculture, forestry and tourism.
