The Zillergrund is the most easterly of the high valleys described as the "Innere Gründe" that branch off fan-like from the Zillertal at Mayrhofen. The Kerbtal, to a great degree without a valley floor and drained by the Ziller, lies within the area of the central gneiss and the slate shell of the Tauern and runs in an arch over 20kms to Mayrhofen. This valley was cultivated in the 12th century. Brandberg was created out of five Urschwaighöfe farms; a settlement comprising mainly individual farms. Many people from the valley were forced to leave their homes in 1837 because of their protestant belief. Over the last decades the extension of the roads and the use of hydro-electric power have brought a new stimulus to the development of the valley. The power station group Zemm-Ziller have put their mark on the Zillergrund through the Zillergründl year reservoir and the Häusling power station.
