This valley that lies to the northwest of Kufstein is drained by the Thierseer Ache which flows into the Inn at Kiefersfelden. The transport connection to the valley, whose scenery is characterised by soft Jura and chalk layers and whose widespread settlements are united in the community of Thiersee, runs from Kufstein over the Marblinger Höhe and also from Bavaria over the Ursprungpass. The name Thiersee refers to the former hunting region which was settled in the 11th or 12th century. Over the centuries animal farming and wood were the most important sources of income for the population. The wood was transported on the Ache to the iron works in Kiefersfelden. The 26 hectare Thiersee lies embedded in charming scenery in Vorderthiersee. Sources of income are farming and tourism, yet more than half of the working population is forced to commute - some to neighbouring Bavaria.
