The Seefelder Plateau with the communities of Reith, Seefeld, Leutasch and Scharnitz was a relatively secluded region up to the beginning of the 20th century. This changed with the construction of the Karwendel railway. Between 1910 and 1912 around 900 construction workers built this impressive line from Innsbruck up to the plateau. With the construction of this line the first tourists came to the region round about Seefeld. With the organisation of the Winter Olympics in 1964 and 1976 the tourist infrastructure also developed. The Nordic disciplines were held in Seefeld and Leutasch. Nowadays the Seefelder Plateau is still the focal point for cross-country skiing in Tyrol. In summer the Alpenbach Karwendel, one of the biggest protected areas in the whole of Austria, invites one to take extensive hikes.
