Image collection »Lechtal«

The historically-based name of the valley limits itself to that valley section of the Lech that runs in a north-easterly direction between Steeg and Weißenbach. The upper and lower Lechtal differ greatly. The soft Jura and chalk formations in the Upper Lechtal have permitted widespread agricultural usage in the form of extensive mountain meadows. This relatively narrow section of the valley with its elongated villages has a friendlier and more inviting appearance than the cleft Main Dolomite Lower Lechtal with its sparse woodlands down to the valley floor and few small settlements. On the basis of the Lech`s water meadows with their varieties of partly rare flora and fauna that are still intact and its untamed course, the river is something very special here. Despite construction measures the Lech has retained its character and dynamism as a wild, natural river and as such is one of the last natural river landscapes in Central Europe. Elbigenalp is the focal point of the valley.
