Image collection »Zell am See«

The district of Zell am See includes the communities of the Pinzgau and is restricted in the south by the Hohe Tauern mountains, in the west by the Kitubüheler Alpen and in the north by the Steinernes Meer. The main town is Zell am See on the western shoreline of the Zeller See. From here the over 100 year-old narrow-gauge railway runs through the Salzachtal to Krimml. A further centre is the town of Saalfelden in the broad basin at the confluence of the Saalach and the Leoganger Ache. Due to its geography, the Pinzgau region is above all a tourist area. Tourist centres are among others the Europa-Sportregion Zell am See/Kaprun, Saalbach-Hinterglemm and Saalfelden and the Nationalpark Hohe Tauern with the Glockner and Venediger mountain region and the famous waterfalls the Krimmler-Wasserfällen. The construction of the storage power station in Kaprun with its reservoirs at Mooserboden and Wasserfallboden has proved to be economically useful as has the power station Enzingerboden in the Stubachtal that is run by water from the Tauernmoossee and the Weißsee. There are road connections to Germany over the Steinpass, to the district of Kitzbühel over Pass Thurn, Grießenpass and Pass Strub, into the Zillertal over the Gerloßpass, to Carinthia over the Großglockner Hochalpenstraße and to East Tyrol over the Felber Tauern or by means of the Felber Tauern-Tunnel. The latter takes on a special position in its role as a link between the provincial parts of North and East Tyrol. The transit traffic has brought an economic upswing to Mittersill. Here, among other things, is the location of the first production site of Blizzard skis.
