The Breitachklamm gorge is located at the exit of the Kleinwalsertal valley near the community of Tiefenbach in the Allgäu. This approximately 2.5 kilometre long and up to 150 metre deep gorge cut into the limestone was already opened to hikers in 1905 on the initiative of the village priest, Johannes Schiebel. By making the Breitachklamm accessible, Schiebel hoped to develop the at the time budding tourism and in this way create a small income for the community. This idea proved successful and up to the present day the gorge is one of the favourite winter and summer excursions in the Allgäu. On 23rd September 1995, approximately 50.000 m3 of rock and scree fell into the gorge as a result of which an approximately 30 metre deep lake was damed up in the gorge. On 23rd March 1996 the water broke out and caused damage of approximately 150.000 € in the gorge.
